Australia is currently being ravaged by one of the harshest and most unexpected bushfires in their history. An estimated 8.4 million hectares of land were lost to the flames along with 2,500 buildings (1,900 of which were houses). 25 people lost their lives to the fire and an estimated billion animals were killed or will die due to starvation and loss of habitat.
The situation is dark to say the least. But it's in these moments that humanity bands together and shines a ray of hope. A collection of celebrities, corporations and several communities have dug in deep to help Australia, with relief donations exceeding the $100 million mark.
Actor Chris Hemsworth and his family donated $1 million to relief efforts along with Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban who donated $500,000 to local fire services. Elton John has restarted his farewell tour in Australia and has pledged $1 million to the victims of the "apocalyptic" fires. Singer Pink and family have donated $500,000 to immediate firefighting efforts as well.
Acclaimed cricketer Shane Warne has auctioned his famous cricketing cap and tennis stars Novak Djokovic and Maria Sharapova both pledged $17,400. The largest donation by far comes from the efforts of Australian comedian and actress Celeste Barber who raised over $42 million through donations. Australia will surely come out stronger from this ordeal with the help of the world behind them.
